GuideAI for musicians: what really works and where to start

You're supposed to post, plan releases, answer enquiries and still make music. AI can take a lot of that off your plate, just not the way the ads promise. I'm Robin Hirte, a producer since 1998, and since autumn 2026 I've been running my music business with an AI assistant. This guide covers what works and what doesn't.

01What AI can really take over for musicians

Anything repetitive that sits next to the music:

  • ideas for posts and captions in your voice
  • subtitles, cover frames and cutting short videos
  • scheduling on several channels and checking that everything went live
  • release copy, sorting enquiries, reminders about open jobs
  • small tools of your own, such as a board for jobs and dates

For me that means: I recorded 60 short videos for two channels in one day, and that covers a whole month. I record and approve, the assistant does the rest.

02What AI shouldn't do for you

It doesn't decide who you say yes to, when a track is finished or what you want to tell your fans. It can prepare, you decide. And this guide isn't about making your music with AI. It's about everything around it.

03Where to start: three steps

Step 1: Pick one task. Take the one that annoys you most, not "everything". For example: you haven't known what to post for two weeks.

Step 2: Give goals, not commands. Tell the assistant what you're working on in the studio and ask for 20 ideas. Ask when you don't understand something, including how something works or what's missing.

Step 3: Write down rules. Whatever the AI got wrong once becomes a written rule, so it still knows next time. Also define what it may do alone and what it must show you first.

Only then is the technical side worth it: connections to your scheduling tool, automation, your own tools. People who start there usually give up.

04Chat, specialist tool or personal assistant?

ChatGPT or Claude in chat

Fits if

you need copy and ideas

Limits

You copy everything yourself, and without written rules you often start from scratch

Marketing tool for musicians

Fits if

you want ads or release marketing ready-made

Limits

It does what it was built for and no more; monthly cost per artist

Your own AI assistant (mine is Claude Code)

Fits if

you want to connect several workflows and stay in control

Limits

Setup takes time, and you'll make mistakes at first

05Mistakes I made myself

  • An instruction that was too broad: I asked for a clean-up, and afterwards a video that was still needed was in the trash. Since then there's a checklist, plus technical locks for what must never happen.
  • Trusting an error message: A scheduling tool reported an error, but the post was online. It was sent again and appeared twice. Now we check first and act second.

Both are part of it. What matters is that every mistake becomes a rule.

06Do other musicians actually use this?

The numbers vary widely. In a LANDR survey (October 2025, 1,200 respondents), 52% said they had used AI for visuals or promotion. In a Sonarworks and Sound On Sound survey (February 2026, nearly 1,200 respondents, mostly professionals), only about one in five used it regularly. Both come from music technology companies, and LANDR sells AI services itself. So many have tried it, far fewer run it day to day.

FAQFrequently asked questions

How do I use AI to promote my music?

Start with ideas and captions in your voice, and approve every post until you trust the result. Then you can automate the scheduling. Your voice stays yours.

Which AI is best for musicians?

For copy and ideas, ChatGPT or Claude are enough. I work with Claude Code because it can also edit files and connect workflows. Which one fits depends on what you want to hand over.

What does it cost?

Subscriptions run roughly 20 to 200 euros a month depending on the tier. Start small.

Can I connect Claude to Ableton?

Yes, through a connection (MCP). I use Producer Pal, for example to lay stems onto the grid.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You need to say clearly what you want. I couldn't code before either, and I still built two audio plugins of my own.

Why do answers get worse in long chats?

Long chats often lose knowledge because older parts get shortened. That's why rules and the current status belong in their own files, not only in the chat.

Won't automated marketing sound fake?

It can if you post unchecked. I record the videos myself. What gets automated is the work afterwards.

Can I use AI-generated material commercially?

That depends on your subscription and the tool's terms of use. Check before you release anything.

Can AI help a small record label?

Yes, with everything that depends on one person: release plans, metadata, promo copy, replies to demos. Start with one task.
